Launch Configuration

Launch Configuration The twin STEREO observatories were launched aboard a single Delta II launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., (Launch Complex 17, Pad B) on Oct. 25, 2006, at 8:52 p.m. EDT. Within the rocket's third stage, one observatory sat atop the other via a specially designed device.

Inside the mobile service tower on Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, workers check the placement of the first half of the fairing around the STEREO spacecraft.

Just at liftoff, clouds of smoke and steam rise around the Delta II rocket carrying the STEREO spacecraft on top. Liftoff from Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was at 8:52 p.m. EDT, on Oct. 25, 2006.
